Online Master of Engineering Degree Programs

Masters Degree - Engineering

A Masters Degree in Engineering will give professional engineers an executive perspective on managing the elements of engineering projects in order to better achieve the goals of the assignments that they are supervising.  This includes learning business fundamentals like contract negotiations, finance, risk assessment, marketing, legal issues, and decision analysis concerning engineering operations.  This will also include the skills needed to lead and manage organizational change in an engineering company.

Advanced positions in engineering don’t involve the practical day-to-day aspects of engineering so much as they require the management of engineering projects.  So if you have a bachelor’s degree in any field of engineering and the practical experience that goes with it, you may wish to step up to the management of projects, rather than just working on the execution of them.  Managing engineering projects of any nature requires business skills, so getting a Masters Degree in Engineering doesn’t mean learning more math and science; rather, it involves gaining the business expertise needed to manage a project.  This is why that although the bachelor’s engineering programs are separated into the many different disciplines; the master’s degree program integrates all disciplines of engineering into the same management program.

Earning a Masters Degree in Engineering will provide you with the opportunity to learn the management and financial side of engineering.  The courses offered will focus on business fundamentals that engineers need to successfully run and complete engineering projects that are fiscally sound.  This will be accomplished by learning the skills needed to bring a new product to market and includes economics, decision analysis, negotiation, and risk assessment.  Through these business principles, you will learn whether or not a new project or product will be a financially successful venture.  This program also looks at all of the legal issues concerning engineering products and services like patents, liability, and copyright issues.  Upon completion of this program, you will understand the executive role that an engineer plays in delivering profitable engineering products and services to their clients.

In a graduate level engineering program, there are two types of master’s degrees.  There is a Master of Science, which mainly focuses on research.  This is the degree that you would take if you want to get a Ph. D. in Engineering.  However, to get ahead with a career in engineering, you will need to complete the Master of Engineering Degree, which is considered to be a professional degree for those wishing to pursue management positions in engineering.  Courses for this degree include:   Managing People and Organizations, The Art and Science of Negotiations, Advanced Marketing Management, Legal Issues for Engineering Managers, Management of Projects and Processes, Strategic Decision and Risk Analysis, System Design Metrics, Engineering Economics, and Engineering Management.  In order to obtain the degree, you will also be required to complete an independent project and give a separate final report.

Career Opportunities in Engineering Management
Career opportunities in engineering management generally go along with work that you may already be performing.  Earning a Masters Degree in Engineering does not require you to leave your current position; in fact, your degree program may be a part of your current career track.  While engineering mangers are always in demand globally, you will probably want to obtain your graduate degree to advance your position in your current company and then go on to work on other projects.
